They drink this all the time and everywhere in Pais Vasco. We usually used a shitty box wine for .98 euros or 1.12 euros. Maybe thats because they didn't want to waste good wine by mixing it. The name is supposedly coined during 1972 Puerto Viejo Festivities (Meaning the old port, five minutes walking distance from my apartment in Algorta). The Legend is that one of the vendors noticed that the wine seemed bad or sour tasting, so decided to mix it. The vendors decided to combine two of their friends nicknames Kalimero and Motxo....KALIMOTXO.

I may not be able to give you all the experience I have from Spain but I can give you this one from Bilbao!
